Spring vs Bottled Water

It's only water, right?

That was the title of an article in the August 2000 issue of Consumer Reports. According to the article, Americans spend $14.4 million per day for bottled water. The price per glass can range from 6 cents to 28 cents depending on the brand. Consumption of bottled water has increased ten fold during the last 25 years from 1.5 gallons to 15.5 gallons per person per year.

All bottled waters are not created equal. A four year study of 103 brands by the Natural Resources Defense Council revealed levels of chlorine by-products or arsenic that were above the threshold set by California, though within limits set by U.S. FDA, in several waters. Bottled waters by law in N.J. must have a two year shelf life. In order to comply with the regulation, chemical preservatives must be added.

Taste the difference:

Taste is another matter. Some tap waters have a swampy taste. Others may have a hydrogen sulfide or chlorine odor. Good drinking water should taste like nothing. However, nothing can still taste a little like something, and water should taste clean, fresh, lively, silky smooth when swallowed and a little crisp just like the water of Spring Hill. Spring Hill water makes drinking your coffee and tea one of life's pleasures.

Here's to your health:

Studies show that most Americans go through life in a dehydrated state. It's important to drink enough water--- eight glasses per day; more in hot weather or if you're especially active. Drinking too little water can cause fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and headaches. Over the long term, drinking too little water has been linked to constipation, kidney stones, arthritis, bursitis, spinal disk failure and even some cancers. In other words good water is healthy for you. Where should that water come from? You can get it from the tap, purchase bottled water at the local super market or stop by Spring Hill located on Canfield Ave. in Mine Hill, N.J.

Spring Hill was discovered some thirty years ago by the members of the Paschal family who owned the land. The water source emanates from a fractured rock ledge located fifteen feet below the surface of the ground.

A six inch pipe had been placed in the ledge under extreme aquifer pressure many years ago and forced 75 feet to a point where users could fill their containers. Recent improvements were made in the pipe outlet by the owner John Paschal. He reduced the water flow at this point to a one inch and a half inch clear plastic hose for ease of filling containers. The water flows continuously and produces approximately 125,000 gallons per day ( unrestricted flow).

During the 1998-99 drought years when most wells and springs in the area dried up, Spring Hill water flowed at the rate of 15,000 gals./day. The water temperature remains a constant 49 degrees F throughout the year.

The crystal clear water is tested on a regular basis for coliform, nitrates and organic and inorganic volatiles. As an example, the gasoline additive MTBE, the detrimental effects of which have been debated over the past year, tests at .37 ppm. The state allowable is 70 ppm. All other parameters are far below the required minimum.Test results are avaiable upon request.

Individuals desiring to draw water from the spring are required to register by completing and returning an application form for spring usage. Registered users are issued an electronic key to unlock the gate. Quarterly donations of at least $10 per household are requested to help defray the cost of liability insurance, record keeping, electricity for night lighting, state required water testing, maintenance etc. Spring usage is monitored using an ACT computer software program that is linked to the electronic key system. The system was installed by the MORRIS SECURITY GROUP , Kenvil, N.J. Some scenes from Spring Hill.
